Legally Binding Contract
A settlement agreement also know as compromise agreement is a legally binding contract between an employer and an employee, usually used to resolve workplace disputes or end employment on agreed terms.

Waiver of Claims
The employee agrees to waive their right to bring certain legal claims against the employer, such as unfair dismissal or discrimination claims.

Independent Legal Advice Required
For the agreement to be valid, the employee must receive independent legal advice from a qualified solicitor or legal adviser.

Financial Compensation
Employers often offer a financial settlement, including redundancy pay, notice pay, and sometimes an ex-gratia payment, which may be tax-free up to £30,000.

Confidentiality Clauses
Settlement agreements often include confidentiality provisions, restricting the employee from discussing existence and terms of the agreement or details of their employment.

Negotiation and Voluntary Agreement
Employees are not required to accept a settlement agreement and can potentially negotiate better terms before signing.
